This legislation would posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 13 American servicemembers who lost their lives while protecting men, women, and children during the evacuation of citizens of the United States and Afghan allies at Hamid Karzai International Airport. It is a fitting tribute to their bravery and patriotism.

Dear Congresswoman McClain:
On behalf of the 2.3 million members of AMAC – Association of Mature American Citizens, including over 7,800 who reside in MI-10, I write to express our support for H.R. 5142, the Congressional Gold Medal Bill.
Nothing defines the personification of American loyalty and patriotism better than service in our armed forces. Tragically, our country experienced a great loss on August 26, 2021, when 13 United States servicemembers were killed in Afghanistan. These heroes were protecting innocent men, women, and children during the evacuation of citizens of the United States and Afghan allies at Hamid Karzai International Airport when a terrorist attack took their lives.
H.R. 5142 rightly honors these brave servicemembers by posthumously awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal, which is Congress’s highest appreciation for distinguished achievements, for their ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our country.
AMAC applauds you, Congresswoman McClain, and your bipartisan co-sponsors, for recognizing the courage and strength of these American patriots and is pleased to offer our organization’s full support for H.R. 5142, the Congressional Gold Medal Bill.
